Guided Tour Of Lord O'Neill's Gardens
Photos of this event here
Members of Randbka were treated to a private guided tour of the beautiful gardens at Shane's Castle on Wednesday 30th May, by Lord O'Neil, preceded by a tour of the estate by Randbka Treasurer Walter McNeil.
Lord O'Neill and his wife have planted numerous trees, shrubs and flora over the last forty four years and he was able to name them all during his most interesting commentary
Shane's Castle is the family seat of the O'Neill's of Clandeboye. The Demesne is one of the most beautiful and well maintained in Ireland with a rich variety of fauna, flora, and insect and bird life. There has been a herd of fallow deer at Shane's Castle for many years. Although the Castle has been in ruins since the fire of 1816, the remaining structure, including a unique Camellia House is a striking feature in the landscape.
After the tour, light refreshments were served in the bee house to members, friends and family.
Lord O'Neill has kindly agreed to give a tour of the ruins next year, including the Camellia House which is e about to undergo a major renovation, replacing the 150 year old timbers.
