Colony Management Summer School

with John Cossburn

Friday 12th and Saturday 13th June 2009

Friday 12th and Saturday 13th June saw the successful 2nd R&DBKA summer school. Organised by the Committee, the Summer School was a unique opportunity for hands on experience, under the instruction of renowned beekeeper, John Cossburn, Roselea Apiary, Hampshire.

The event commenced on Friday evening with an hour at the apiary where John set out the agenda for the weekend. This was followed by meal served to the attendees in the Arches Community Centre, Randalstown, followed by a lengthy question and answer session

The weather was reasonably kind just one very heavy shower kind and we had a fantastic day of beekeeping at our beautiful apiary on Lord O’Neill’s Estate at Shane’s Castle interspersed with regular injections of home made scones, lots of tea and coffee and lunch at the picturesque estate old railway station.

The delegates were again a wide mixture of budding beekeepers, with or without bees and beekeepers with 30+ years of experience. We were delighted to welcome back several of last year’s attendees and pleased to see some new faces. We are very pleased that we have at least one new member and hopefully more as a result of this weekend.

John Cossburn again  provided and entertaining, knowledgeable and interesting insight into his many years as a commercial beekeeper, honey judge, instructor and teacher.

The best way to describe the weekend is perhaps these quotes from two of the delegates:

Caroline and Susie

Just a quick note to say a big thank you to both of you for all your efforts in organising the ‘summer school’.
It was a great weekend – lots learned, more new friends made and of course excellent catering!
Looking forward to repeating the experience next year.
Kind regards
Hilly

Dear Caroline,

Thanks to you and Susie again and all at Randalstown BKA for hosting the summer school.  John is a very engaging and knowledgeable tutor.  It was great to see a practical demonstration of queen rearing, it has certainly given me the confidence to have a go myself.

Good luck with the honey show - I'm sorry I can't be there.

Regards,

Dylan
